Sr. Jose Women’s Shelter Needs Volunteers

The Sr. Jose Women's Center had its beginning as a night emergency shelter during the coldest winter nights and operated as such for the past two winters. Through the personal stories of poverty, violence, unsafe and unhealthy living conditions of our women guests, we developed a vision of providing a warm, safe and loving Christian environment for the women we serve.

Very cold nights will arrive soon and during those cold nights, women living on the streets need a warm, secure place to sleep. We have a unique opportunity to reach out in support and compassion to these women in need. Last year, the Sr. Jose Hobday Women's Shelter ran from November 25 through March. It was a very successful year and we provided over 1000 bed nights for women.

We are busy planning for our third year and will run Sr. Jose's Women's Shelter during Operation Deep Freeze from mid November through April. This year we will be in our new home located on 18th Street, near the St. Vin-cent De Paul Center just south of Downtown. The shelter will hold approximately 12 - 14 sleeping cots for women only and will operate from approximately 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. seven days a week.

We need women volunteers to stay one night every two weeks at the shelter. If you have an interest or would like further information regarding guidelines and procedures, please contact Jean Fedigan at 954-3373 (cell) or 749-5688 (Home) for more information.

You can make a difference for the children of Poland

The non-profit organization, Global Volunteers, based in St. Paul, MN, is seeking compassionate short-term volunteers to share their English skills with students in eastern Poland. No experience is required, just an open mind, flexible attitude and willingness to serve. Experience first-hand the rich culture and warm hospitality of Poland while you lend a helping hand to its next generation of leaders.

Global Volunteers was founded by a Catholic couple in 1984 and for the past 21 years they have organized volunteers for this project in the diocese of Siedlce, Poland (a little over an hours drive east of Warsaw). Volunteers pay a service program fee (tax-deductable) that covers all lodging, all meals, project expenses, the service of Polish staff, program expenses and administrative costs. Airfare is extra.

Call 800-487-1074 for details or visit www.globalvolunteers.org or via US Mail: Global Volunteers; 375 E. Little Canada Rd. St. Paul, MN 55117.
